This weekend I have a pleasure to teach a seminar for a good friend of mine Tony Torres in Sierra Vista Arizona. We did the seminar yesterday and the primary focus of the training was on the self-defense side of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. In my opinion one of the things that makes Gracie Jiu-Jitsu unique yes it's ability to focus on the realities of the street. Sport based jujitsu is more popular in the industry currently but one of the primary reasons I got into the study was to improve skills I would need in an encounter on the street. A lot of things start to change when your opponent is not bound by any rules and is free to strike you anytime he likes. A lot of times in the study of Jiu-Jitsu this reality is forgotten, it is important to keep this in mind as you do your study in class. Some techniques that are percentage from the sport based side just simply will not work in a street environment. If you are looking to study and your focus is self-defense it is important to make sure that the school focuses on these aspects that you are seeking. It is a common trend in the industry today to claim to teach self-defense but actually be teaching a sports-based curriculum. I have one more day and see your Avista and then I will be back traveling to Dallas Texas. I am going to be working with a swat team in the Dallas area for most of next week.
