I had a student walked up to me this week and give me a very
large book of martial art techniques. My initial reaction mentally was it was
just a book of flash. Of course the book had new ideas and possibilities that
were useful. But is a common line of thought that I share with my students that
the deeper you understand the core and foundational movements of your body the
better you will be in any physical endeavor you take on. This makes me think
about my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor or with Master Pedro Sauer, an example is
when I have had the opportunity to roll with Prof. Sauer it seems that his
basic position is an attack by itself. Even before he starts to work on actual
submissions just the way he places himself applies pressure to the opponent.
I believe that just your basic movements can become some of
your most advanced attacks in martial art study. The more you understand the
basics the more you will know that is considered advanced. So I think that the
chase of more techniques or trying to increase the number of techniques that
you know is a short path. Study the basic foundation and you will end up with
more that you expected in the first place. Seek depth of understanding not more
techniques.
Bruce Lee said it best when he said “I fear not the man who has
practiced 10000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000
times”.
