I am in Sterling Virginia today at the Pedro Sauer Brazilian jujitsu Academy. I am fortunate enough to be spending the day with Master Pedro Sauer in order to finish up a tactical arrest and control certification under him. The school and myself have been doing a lot of law enforcement/personal protection training this last year and it looks like next year will have even more. With this in mind I have been speaking with professor about finishing up this certification. The information not only will make the law-enforcement training programs better but they will also spill over into the student programs at the school. It is important for new information and knowledge to continually be coming into the school otherwise that school is a dead school. All too often this is the case in the martial arts industry.

Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia Hand Gun and Self Defense Training

A few weekends ago we were fortunate to have Greg Nelson teaching a seminar at our school in Thai boxing. Greg is one of the most successful UFC coaches in the United States today. Not to mention he has a wealth of knowledge in Thai boxing. The Atlanta martial arts Center is directly affiliated with Greg Nelson and his Thai boxing program. What makes Greg Thai boxing program so unique and valuable is his background and experience teaching fighters for UFC. So not only does the practitioner had the opportunity to learn technical and fundamental Thai boxing but they also gain the knowledge of how Greg has trained his fighters to adapt their Thai boxing for use in the UFC.
It is not uncommon to see various kickboxing classes taught on every street corner. The drawback to these classes are that the practitioner never really learns how to do the techniques correctly. Most of the class is designed just to keep your heart rate up by punching and kicking it something. The drawback to not learning technical Thai boxing or kickboxing is that when you start to pick up the pace in order to increase the training level you are more acceptable to injury if you are not doing the techniques fundamentally correct. If you take time to learn the fundamental structures of the system when you step up your training pace you not only will be able to train much harder and at a higher rate but you will be able to do so safely. This is the benefit of actually learning the art. Other benefits of learning correct movement is that your body will become stronger, looser and have greater range of motion from the proper technique. You will also be able to train longer. It is not uncommon for a martial arts practitioner who has learned techniques in the correct manner to continue to study even as they age older and older.
This is one of the reasons why we required the students in our program to take their time in the beginning and learn the fundamentals. If they do so there martial arts career will be long and a will benefit tremendously from what the art has to offer.

this week I will be in Dallas Texas training with Tim Wade in Pekiti Tirsia. PT is one of the foremost Filipino Kali systems in the world. It is one of the most effective weapons systems I have come across in my training in the last 30 years. It is especially good at training people with the use of the knife. A lot of the information I share with law enforcement and the bodyguard groups that I work with on a regular basis is based on this information. It also has a tremendous influence on our programs at the Atlanta martial arts center here in Woodstock Georgia. Because of the system's effectiveness and Tim's vast wealth of knowledge I tried to travel to Texas at least once a year to train with him in this art.

This last weekend we had the keysi fighting method instructor development program three day seminar at the school here in Woodstock Georgia. Over the course of the three days three new KFM instructors were certified to teach KFM. The three guys came in from various parts of the United States in order to achieve the certification. KFM is fairly new to the United States but it is very popular in Europe with good reason. It is a very effective self-defense method designed to answer the multiple opponent situation. This is one of the reasons why we have the program at our school here in Woodstock Georgia, very few systems intelligently trained to handle multiple opponents like KFM does.

We are hoping to host more of the KFM instructor development programs here at the school in the future. There is a possibility of one in February of 2012. If you are interested in seeking certification feel free to contact the school here in Woodstock Georgia or go online to the keysi fighting method website and you will be able to get more information on the program.

Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia Hand Gun and Self Defense Training

Martial Arts Mindset

One of the things I try to instill into the students at AMAC is the thought method for longevity in the martial arts. I am a life-long student of the arts and I plan to be training when I’m 80. So with that in mind, I view my training in a long term mindset. I make a great effort to train safe in order to avoid injury and time off from training. This also affects the kind of training partner I choose to be. I strive to learn the science behind each art, the technique, the mechanic - because youthful strength and speed may elude me someday - then all that will be left is the knowledge, sensitivity and ingrained skill.

I also strive to investigate outside training opportunities that will align with the martial fitness mindset. Some of the areas I strive to be active in is strength training - whether it means training at a gym, or with various tools at home or at the school (like kettlebells, club bells, sandbags, etc.). Another area is diet. There are many thought patterns and variations of diets out there. The main thing is to find what works for you and implement a positive change for yourself. These are just a few things I usually suggest to students as they get more involved in the overall self improvement mindset of the martial arts.

Most people I see come in to the school are doing so in order to learn self-defense just as I did when I first got into the martial arts. One of the things I noticed after training for a while is that the martial arts has a much deeper level of knowledge available to the adult student. I always hear people talk about losing their range of motion in their shoulders and hips as they age, and they always are looking for something that will help out with that. Likewise I also hear about how they start to loose to rent as they begin to age and they are looking for an answer to that as well. This is the beauty of the martial arts, it not only is a fantastic physical training method but if it is done intelligently, all of the previously mentioned areas will be taught to the student. And intelligently trained martial artist who has had a decent instructor will have answers for loosening and opening joints, strengthening the bone and muscle of the body. They will have intelligent methods to relax the body when they are dealing with stress. They will learn intelligent dietary procedures as well. All of this can be gained from the study of martial arts, the trick is to be able to find instructor who has the ability to convey this level of knowledge.

It is unfortunate that most schools that are in operation today do not possess this level of knowledge. Most schools in the market are designed to teach kids, which is okay unless you're an adult looking to be educated at an adult level. A common conversation I have with new people coming into the school who have had previous experience with their children and they want to put their child into our adult class. My program director or I will usually tell them that we don't allow children or young kids in our adult program. This response is usually met with, “but at our old school the kids and the adults were in the same class all the time”. The problem with this is in these schools they usually stick the adults into the kids class, so you have an adult actually training at the level of a child. If a class is truly taught at the intellectual level for the adult a child will have no interest in this class. This is why it is important to find a school that is truly designed to teach the adult, if you can find this hold onto it because it is uncommon.

woodstock Georgia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense

This month your head instructor and I finished a level II certification in the combat hardened handgun training program. What this means for the school is you will soon see this program on the schedule for the students who are enrolled in our cross training program here at the school. This class is unique in that it isn't just another class on how to shoot a handgun. This class actually teaches the student how to combine his empty hand defensive tactics skills with the use of a handgun. This class will also allow us to share some of the information that I have been teaching while instructing law enforcement personnel over the last year.

Also this month we have expanded the Jeet Kune Do schedule, we have added more specialized classes so that the student can focus on individual ranges of combat if need be. I have received a lot of positive feedback for instance on the Monday night Jeet Kune Do grappling and ground fighting class as well as Saturday's pummeling class.

In addition to the changes on the Jeet Kune Do schedule we have also made some adjustments on the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu schedule. On Wednesday night we have added a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu throwing and take down class. This class will focus on various types of throwing from Jiu-Jitsu and judo as well as the pummeling game that is required for intelligent entry into your ground game. Also on Saturdays we have added and in school open mat session at 10:40 AM. This open mat is an opportunity to get together with your training partner once a week and get extra training time on the mat.

On July 22 through the 24th we will be putting on a KFM instructor certification course here at school. People will be coming in from all around the United States in order to train and achieve certification to teach KFM. July 26 through the 29th I will be in Texas with my Pekiti Tirsia instructor Tim Wade. Pekiti Tirsia has a major influence on our Kali program here at the school. On July 30 I will be in College Station Texas teaching a protection response tactics class for the international protection group. IPG is one of the top bodyguard training schools in the United States and I have been fortunate enough to be hired by them to run their defensive tactics program for them. On July 31 we will be having our monthly sub affiliate Jiu-Jitsu open mat. Currently we have 12 schools underneath our sub affiliate Jiu-Jitsu program. This is good for the AMAC student because this open mat gives them the opportunity to train with many students from many different schools.

woodstock Georgia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense

Effortless Power

Most exercises in the west such as weight lifting, jogging, swimming, etc. works primarily on the muscular system and the lungs. The Chinese also partake in this form of exercise but they consider Chi Gung “Qigong” to be a higher level of training for the body. One difference is that Qigong loosens the muscles and expands the joints in order to build power. Aerobics, stretching and strength training will build a form of external strength and flexibility that is based on contraction in the body. The internal exercises of Qigong will build effortless power that is based on relaxation or expansion of the body. The more relaxed and open the body is, the more of its natural energy and power can be expressed.

I see this principle in our Jiu-Jitsu classes at the school. A beginning student will roll in a tensed state due to the fact that he is in a new environment and may be stressed from the new experience. But watch an advanced player roll and you will see a very relaxed attitude and a relaxed physical state. You will also notice that the more relaxed practitioner will feel much stronger and heavier than someone that is holding onto tension as they roll.

I have seen this in every form of martial art I have come in contact with. The farther along the practitioner is, the more relaxed they become and the more powerful they feel.

As always thank you for your support!

Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia Hand Gun and Self Defense Training

This weekend we had a level I and a level II combat hard handgun certification class. One of the reasons we are hosting the combat hard program at the school is because we are working on starting a handgun based class based on this program. In this class is unlike your normal handgun class that just teaches you how to handle the handgun and that's it. The combat hard program teaches you how to bully and the use of the handgun with your defensive tactics and martial arts skills at a close range. Statistically most shootings happen within 10 feet. I would hear this statistic a lot when training SWAT teams and law enforcement groups, I knew eventually wanted to add a program at the school that would educate our students in this range of combat but I wanted one that was relevant to what was actually going on on the street. The combat hard handgun course came the closest to what I was looking for to round off our program here at the Atlanta martial arts center. The projectile range is not a range that is normally covered in most martial art schools but considering the world today and the threats that we have to worry about on a day-to-day basis it only makes sense to have something that will educate you in this range and do it in a way that will blend in to your other self defense and martial arts skills.

This class not only teaches you how to use the handgun and blend it with defensive tactics intelligently it will also educate you in the legal ramifications of using a handgun. These legal concerns are actually part of the class that you will take on a weekly basis so you have to continually think about the legal ramifications as well as the skills you are developing as you go through the adrenals in each class. I have had the opportunity to travel around the United States and work with a lot of other school owners as I travel I am continually searching for new information in the martial arts field. I consider it my job to seek out the most effective and state-of-the-art information that is available today and bring it back to the students here at the Atlanta martial arts center. As I am traveling one thing I noticed is that there is not an intelligent program available that would answer the question of this range until now. So keep an eye on the AMAC schedule for the combat hard handgun combatives class.

Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jeet Kune Do

In one of the areas we have been focusing on this last week in our Jeet kune do classes is trapping. Trapping is a very common thing to happen in a fight. If someone is grabbing at you for trying to hit you it's human nature to try to grab their hands or arms in order to stop them. Immobilizing an arm with her to just control and opponent or to control them long enough in order to strike them is considered trapping. There are many areas entrancing to take in consideration as you train, one of the most important ones is your ability to ingrain what ever take me you were training into the body so that it will happen without thought when it is necessary. Here at the school we nicknamed this principle the nerve twitch response. Probably the most common way to train in this tougher response is through high repetition. It is also important to train these ideas out of a drill that will flow continually. Most of the time the beginner will learn each individual trapping method by doing one or two moves that as he becomes an intermediate student he wants these moves to increase in speed and smoothness. All of these skills can be train have an intelligent flow drill that will benefit both practitioners. There is also a certain level of timing that is learn from these drills. In the beginning the time will be steady and uninterrupted but as each practitioner gets better at their individual techniques they will break Time and attempt to enter and control their up partners hands and arms. This is beneficial to both because the person being attacked in the real also has to learn to defend each attack.

Training drills are also important for a school that is striving to create a safe training environment for the students. Though the training level does not equal that. Fight if you have two practitioners who are highly trained in the drill they have the ability to get very close to this level of intensity without being injured by the training. This is important to the adult student who also has to take into consideration that they have to go back to work on Monday and cannot do so if they are suffering from an injury. The training atmosphere is also directly affected by the background of the chief instructor, when considering a training group or school it is a good idea to not settle for any instructor that has less than 20 years experience. With this amount of time of training experience the instructor or head instructor should have the ability to ingrain safety into the training methods they use in class.

Get a Move On

Aside from the self defense skills you develop from training in the martial arts, the regular training also helps with anxiety and stress. Anxiety and stress will release chemicals that accumulate in the body. If you have a stressful routine throughout your week, by the end of the week they can build up and over time have a negative effect on your body. Training on a regular routine can clear these chemicals or stress toxins out of the body. I regularly hear the comment in class, “I always feel so much better after coming to the school and training”.

I often speak of having a maintenance plan for your body machine. Regular exercise is a very important item to have in your plan. That’s just another great thing about being in the culture of the martial arts; it supports a life long journey of physical development and intelligent maintenance of the body - especially if you can find a good school.

Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia

Guro Dan Inosanto has shared this idea with me many times in the past and it still holds true today. The idea of the Learning Triangle is this: Imagine a triangle laying on its side, the base line of the triangle is to your left and the tip is to your right. Imagine again that you are represented on the tip of the triangle and on the base line there are three points, the top corner, the bottom corner and the middle of the baseline.

The top of corner of the baseline is your teacher, he is the common source of knowledge in the given area you are studying. The bottom corner of the baseline is your younger brother or sister in class, some one who may be new to class or the area of study. The middle of the base line is someone who has studied for the same amount of time that you have, someone that would be considered your equal in class.

The reason for the triangle arrangement is this: You can learn from any point on the Learning Triangle. Obviously you learn from your teacher, but you should also be aware that you will learn from your classmates that have been training for the same amount of time as you. They may have a slightly different point of view of the same problem and this point of view may help you learn the topic better. Then there is your younger classmate, who, through questions, may force you to look at a topic from different angles. Having to formulate an explanation will sometimes bring you to seeking out new ways to present the material you have learned, helping you (and the younger classmate) to learn it better.

Looking at learning this way . . . . . it will expand your learning and training experience.

This week in our Jeet Kune Do class here at the Atlanta martial arts Center we are focusing on the trapping range. If you are familiar with the range you would have to be in in order to punch someone this is generally called boxing range. If you stepped in a little closer to the opponent this is what we call trapping range in Jeet Kune Do. Trapping is when you try to immobilize your opponents hands and arms in order to keep them from grabbing or hitting you while you are attacking them. This is important because in a self-defense situation it is good to put yourself in a safe situation before you try to attack. Trapping can also be used to catch joint locks or to move into pummeling range where you could throw the opponent or do a takedown to put them on the ground. The trapping in Jeet Kune Do is based on the art of wing Chun. Bruce Lee studied wing Chun at a young age and it was this influence that brought it into the art of Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do was designed by Bruce Lee to be used on the street. Since it was made for this purpose it does not follow the rules of most sport-based systems, this is important because if you are seeking to be trained in self-defense is an important thing to know about the art you are studying or the instructor you are studying under. Both self-defense based systems and sport-based systems have tremendous benefits but depending on what your goal is in the martial arts it will be an important question to ask as you are looking for a martial arts school that will fit your goals.

Self Defense Woodstock Georgia Mixed Martial Arts

We are soon going to be updating our Jeet Kune Do program schedule. We are going to add some specialized classes in order to focus on specific areas of self-defense. Some of the specialized classes will include a Jeet Kune Do ground fighting class, and AG can go pummeling class. This will allow us to convey more detailed information to the student body. The great thing about Jeet Kune Do it is designed for self-defense, it was not developed for sport-based combat. Since JKD was not developed for the rain it makes a great answer to anyone looking for real-world self-defense. And all this combined with the adult centered environment at the Atlanta martial arts center makes our Jeet Kune Do program a good answer for the professional adult who is looking to learn how to defend himself in today's world but is not interested in the typical meathead mixed martial arts school environment.

I have been adding Plyometric training to my training lately and have been having great results.

Plyometric training for the martial arts can help you increase your explosive power, your speed. It is important to remember that Plyometric training should be accompanied with strength training.

Remember to always warm up before your Plyo training session, this will help to avoid injury from the training. I usually do about 10-15 minuets of running to warm the body then begin the training. A good warm up will also increase the benefits of the training. It does this by increasing the sensitivity of the muscle spindle, which contains the fibres (called intrafusal fibres) that register the amount of stretch within a muscle.

I usually use an exercise that will build poser in one of the basic movements that you will find in the martial arts. an example would be the Jab and the Cross motion. most of the time you see the chest pass to develop this line in the upper body, but the chest pass is not a basic mechanic used in the martial arts.

you can get into the jab position with proper mechanics and have some one pass you a medicine ball. catch the ball in your Jabbing hand and let the weight of the ball contract the arm. at the bottom of the movement sharply reverse the motion and throw the ball back. the concept is the same as the chest pass exercise only i do it with the jab, cross body position and mechanics.

I usually do the exercises 3 times per week. remember to rest between sets for 3 to 5 mins. The goal is not fatigue but to complete each repetition with the maximum amount of speed and intensity. Also plyometric exercises won't leave you out of breath and that is normal so remember not to try to add more weight or reps to soon in your training.

This week in our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class we are training on how to pass the guard. When only groom a lot of people will use their legs to contain you or keep you controlled. This is one learning to get around the legs, in order to get to a position of dominance and control your own you have to have the ability to pass the legs so that you can get to the side control position and then work your way into the mount position. Learning the past and when traffic this position is what we are working on this week. There are many ways to do this but you want to choose a method that is based on leverage and control of your opponent. This is what Gracie Jiu-Jitsu does best, all of the techniques in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu were design to be based on body mechanics and leverage in order to allow a smaller opponent to survive and win against a larger opponent.
This also extremely important to choose a school where you can accomplish your training in a nonthreatening and safe environment. It is not uncommon in the martial arts to see the people who actually need to learn something to defend themselves be scared off from a class because of a person's bad attitude in class. This is something that the Atlanta martial art does best.

Self Defense Woodstock GA

Just finished an eight hour day of training with the executive protection group based out of New York. In the course we went through is called protection response tactics. PRT is specially designed for the protection specialist and how they operate in their field. I am currently traveling around the US and teaching this course for EPI.

The following is a breakdown of the class;
The Executive Protection Institute (EPI) is developing a new system of innovative and proven response measures designed to fulfill the unique requirements of the Personal Protection Specialist (PPS). EPI's Protection Response Tactics (PRT) includes techniques from a variety of striking and grappling arts that will be beneficial to both the skilled operator and the novice. PRT offers appropriate solutions to all levels of risk.
All countermeasures employed by the PPS should reduce the risk to those they protect.

The PPS seeks to reduce the risk to the client by avoiding confrontation. If faced with confrontation, the PPS would prefer to evacuate the client. Sometimes, avoidance does not work, sometimes evacuation is not the answer, and sometimes the appropriate countermeasure is the reasonable application of physical force. PRT provides the tools necessary for that reasoned response.
With the increased popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), PPSs face an opponent who has increased awareness and access to effective training. Despite proper preparations to avoid conflict, the PPS may be faced with a threat that requires immediate engagement. PRT provides the tools and the training to reduce the risk by engaging the threat.

The Protectors ultimate goal is to reduce the client's risk by using the appropriate response. PRT provides the tools and the training to give the PPS additional appropriate countermeasures to help keep their clients safe.
Lead instructor for the course is Alan Baker of the Atlanta Martial Arts Center (AMAC). Alan has 13 black belts in various disciplines awarded by acknowledged masters in their art. Alan has years of training military, law enforcement and private sector personnel. Assisting Alan is Stacy Roberts, a former law enforcement officer who is now a skilled private sector operator. Both Alan and Stacy are PPS certified and instructors with EPI. Other AMAC and EPI Instructors will also be assisting Alan and Stacy.

woodstock GA self defense class

This week I am in New York teaching a large group of bodyguards for the executive protection Institute. We have designed programs for EPI that are specially designed for the bodyguard industry. It is not uncommon to see groups in this industry higher martial artist to teach a given martial art because there are happens to be popular at the moment. This does not make a lot of sense since the study of a given part Mond not fit the environment of the professional bodyguard.

What allows us to create programs for this industry is our vast background in some of the most proven martial arts and self-defense methods available today. The opportunity to train in this industry has also directly affected our curriculums and teaching methods here at the Atlanta martial arts center. Since we primarily focus on self-defense and not sport based martial arts, opportunities to train in various industries like law enforcement, military, and bodyguard work directly affect how we teach civilians at our school.

Self Defense Woodstock GA

One of the programs that we are developing here at the Atlanta martial arts center is a program that combines the handgun and empty hand defensive tactics skills. It is not uncommon to see handgun classes taught a martial art schools but it is uncommon to see a class that will combine the use of a pistol combined with empty hand skills. This is a very unique concept and it is something that you will not see offered into many martial art schools. And since we focus primarily on the adult student here at a AMAC we believe it is important to offer programs like this. If you consider the level of violence in the world today especially in the Atlanta area it only makes sense to develop your skill level with the handgun as well as your defensive tactics self-defense skills.

The Atlanta martial arts center is located in Woodstock Georgia. For more information on AMAC and the programs we offer at the school feel free to get in touch with us at 770-926-3030. You can also check us out on the web @ Atlantamartialartscenter.com.

Self Defense class Woodstock GA

One of the things that we trying to do here at the school is find a link between your empty hand training and your firearm training. This weekend we will have Steve Mosley teaching a seminar that is going to do just that. We will be going over methods of combining your basic empty hand movements with the use of the gun also. There are a lot of schools that will teach classes on empty hand combat and then have a class on the use of fire arm. But it is important to study how the to work together. This combination of two major areas of study is called gap-art study.

The study of gap art in any area is a complicated one. It takes a lot of time and effort and training to ingrain the popper proper response needed to be efficient in that area. This is one of the reasons in most commercial martial arts schools you don't see a lot of effort and time spent on gap art It is easier just to teach the basics and then give someone a belt to make them feel they have achieved something they have not.

This is one of the things that separates AMAC from most other schools is we take the Time to developed the whole picture. This will take a little more time then what is most commonly expected from training the martial arts. Today you can call most martial arts schools and ask how long it will take to get a black belt and they will tell you 2 to 3 years. This amount of time for this achievement has grown smaller and smaller over the years for the sake of the business side of martial arts. Actually it is better to hear that it will take 5 to 10 years to receive this rank, when you hear this it should tell you that you are actually going to learn something and not just put it in a certain amount of class hours and be given something that means nothing.

I just left Fort Lauderdale Florida where I got to train with one of the best Chinese Boxing Instructors in the US, Professor James Cravens. We spent two days training on Professors curriculum. I got a tremendous amount of information out of the trip and I am looking forward to bringing it home to AMAC. The information should be a great addition to our curriculums at the school.
