Woodstock Townlake Georgia martial arts self-defense Gracie jujitsu

This weekend I have a pleasure to teach a seminar for a good friend of mine Tony Torres in Sierra Vista Arizona. We did the seminar yesterday and the primary focus of the training was on the self-defense side of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. In my opinion one of the things that makes Gracie Jiu-Jitsu unique yes it's ability to focus on the realities of the street. Sport based jujitsu is more popular in the industry currently but one of the primary reasons I got into the study was to improve skills I would need in an encounter on the street. A lot of things start to change when your opponent is not bound by any rules and is free to strike you anytime he likes. A lot of times in the study of Jiu-Jitsu this reality is forgotten, it is important to keep this in mind as you do your study in class. Some techniques that are percentage from the sport based side just simply will not work in a street environment. If you are looking to study and your focus is self-defense it is important to make sure that the school focuses on these aspects that you are seeking. It is a common trend in the industry today to claim to teach self-defense but actually be teaching a sports-based curriculum. I have one more day and see your Avista and then I will be back traveling to Dallas Texas. I am going to be working with a swat team in the Dallas area for most of next week.

The Atlanta martial arts Center is located in Woodstock/Townlake Georgia. If you would like more information on the programs that are offered at the school feel free to call the training Center at 770-926-3030. You can also check out the website at atlantamartialartscenter.com.

Self-Dicipline in the Martial Arts - Woodstock GA

Elbert Hubbard, one of the most prolific writers in American history, once said, "Self-discipline is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not".

Self-Discipline is one of the valuable skills I personally have received from my training in the Martial Arts. Not only has the arts taught me discipline but it has given me an environment to continually sharpen and develop this skill. I believe there are levels of self-discipline and the longer you work at it the skill the better / stronger it becomes. Like anything you practice on a regular basis you will improve that skill. The martial arts school also supplies like-minded people to surround yourself with and create an environment and a support system for your journey.

I believe Self-discipline is the key to personal greatness.  With self-discipline, the average person can rise as far and fast as his talents can take him.  This is something that I am fortunate enough to witness on a regular basis in the classroom. If you are fortunate enough to belong to a good martial arts Academy you will not only pro-your physical skills and abilities you will also have an opportunity to develop yourself on a deeper level.

Get on the mat!

Study the Foundation the rest will follow

Study the Foundation the rest will follow

I had a student walked up to me this week and give me a very large book of martial art techniques. My initial reaction mentally was it was just a book of flash. Of course the book had new ideas and possibilities that were useful. But is a common line of thought that I share with my students that the deeper you understand the core and foundational movements of your body the better you will be in any physical endeavor you take on. This makes me think about my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor or with Master Pedro Sauer, an example is when I have had the opportunity to roll with Prof. Sauer it seems that his basic position is an attack by itself. Even before he starts to work on actual submissions just the way he places himself applies pressure to the opponent.

I believe that just your basic movements can become some of your most advanced attacks in martial art study. The more you understand the basics the more you will know that is considered advanced. So I think that the chase of more techniques or trying to increase the number of techniques that you know is a short path. Study the basic foundation and you will end up with more that you expected in the first place. Seek depth of understanding not more techniques.

Bruce Lee said it best when he said “I fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000 times”.

Erik Paulson Seminar Woodstock Towne Lake GA

Erik Paulson Seminar Woodstock Towne Lake GA

At the end of this month the Atlanta Martial Arts Center will be hosting sensei Erik Paulson for a mixed martial arts/combat submission wrestling seminar. We normally have sensei Erik in every six months here at the school. He is a major influence on many of the programs here at the school. Erik is considered one of the pioneers of the mixed martial arts. He has a background in multiple martial arts including Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do / Jun Fan Gung Fu, Erik is a full instructor under Sifu Dan Inosanto, he also holds instructor rank in Thai boxing, judo and many more.

The thing that makes Erik unique is his level of organization in what he teaches. I have studied with various different instructors from the martial arts industry and more often than not they generally will teach you what works for them. Erik has an approach where he will demonstrate a set of things and help you find out what individual technique works best for you and your game. With this in mind any level practitioner or any level instructor can come train with him and come away with valuable information that will help them with their goals in the martial arts.

If you have not taken advantage of the opportunity I highly suggest catching one of Erik's events you will not be sorry that you did.

Developing a team training environment.
One of the things I talk to the students about on a regular basis is the importance of having a team that you can train with that will create the correct learning environment. Often times it is thought that in the martial arts the harder you go in your training the better you will become. More often than not this is not true, in my 33 years in the martial arts what I have witnessed is the guys that go hard generally end up injured and fallout of training or the guys on the other side of the room that are training more intelligently will catch up to them and their ego can handle the reality that they were wrong.

I'm not saying that one should never trained with intensity this is important too. But if you have a good group of training partners, what I normally referred to as a intelligent training team, you have the ability to safely try new things which you would not normally try against an aggressive opponent. Having this environment not only gives you the ability to train longer but also to train in a more intelligent manner.
Sometimes this type of training is difficult to find. That is why it is a common saying that a good training partner in the martial arts is worth his weight in gold. So if you happen to find just one partner who has this mentality of training much less a group of people you are very fortunate.

mixed martial arts Association woodstock towne lake ga

We have been reorganizing the combat submission wrestling/mixed martial arts program under Erik Paulson. The new Association is called the Pro-Coach Association. The new Association is designed for affiliates and coaches that wish to publicly market themselves as a professional mixed martial arts coach under sensei Erik Paulson.

One of the benefits the new Association offers is the ability for a new affiliate to be connected to a mentoring coach that not only helps the new affiliate with their personal growth in the martial arts development but also is available for guidance and program development and overall business that the affiliate may have questions about. An additional perk is an organized week to week curriculum and other written documents that can help the new affiliate develop a professional program.

If you are a school owner in looking to add a mixed martial arts/combat submission wrestling program to your school you can touch base with me at the training center in Woodstock Georgia at any time in order to get more information.

On September 29 Erik Paulson will be in Woodstock Georgia teaching a mixed martial arts seminar. Erik is one of the pioneers of MMA in the United States and always brings some fantastic information to the school when he visits. AMAC is honored to be a regional training center for Erik's Combat Submission Wrestling. For more information on this event or our mixed martial arts program here at our school in Woodstock Georgia call 770-926-3030.
